A private boat tour from Albufeira means the operator gives your group a boat and a skipper for an agreed number of hours, and nobody else comes aboard. You choose the start time within the operator's hours, you have a say in the route and the stops, and the boat waits for you rather than the other way round. That is the whole difference from a shared ticket, where you buy a seat on a fixed 2–3 hour loop with ten, twenty or more other passengers.
The cost difference is large. Shared coastline and cave trips started from about €30–€35 per person on GetYourGuide when we checked in August 2026. A private charter is priced per boat and comes to several times that. This guide explains what you get for the extra money, what the Benagil rules still forbid, the types of private boat, how quotes are built, who sells private time from Albufeira, and how to book.
What a private charter is, and what a shared ticket is
Shared ticket. You book a seat on a scheduled departure. The boat leaves when the timetable says, follows the operator's standard route west along the cliffs to Benagil and back, and the skipper decides where to slow down and for how long. The 2.5-hour caves and dolphins tour and the 2–3 hour coastline and caves tour are the typical products; the caves and coastline guide shows those routes. You pay per person, children often pay less, and cancellation is usually free until 24 hours before.
Private skippered charter. You book the whole boat. The skipper is still in charge of safety and the sea, but the plan is built around your group: leave at 11:00 rather than 09:30, go east to the red cliffs of Falésia instead of west, stop at a beach for a swim, wait outside Benagil until the light is right, or turn back early because a child has had enough. Private cave loops are often sold as two to four hours; half-day and full-day yacht charters run longer, usually with a lunch stop at anchor.
A third contract, bareboat or self-drive hire, rents you the boat without a skipper and requires a licence the rental company accepts. It is not a tour and this guide does not cover it in detail; Algarve Boat Rentals is the Albufeira name for that.
When a private boat tour is worth it
Group size. The quote is per boat, so the arithmetic changes with headcount. Two people pay the full charter price for a view they could have had for €30 each. Eight to twelve people on a small skippered boat split the same number, and the per-head cost gets much closer to a shared seat while the day is entirely theirs. Ask for the boat's passenger limit in writing before you invite anyone else.
Control of timing. Shared boats leave together in the morning. A private skipper can start after a late breakfast, finish before an airport transfer, or run at sunset without the sunset-cruise crowd. Morning still gives the calmest sea; a private boat lets you pick the hour.
Privacy and special occasions. A proposal, a birthday, an anniversary lunch at anchor or a family photo session all work better without strangers on the next bench. Operators are used to these requests and will often help with a cake or a bottle if you ask when you book.
Needs a shared boat cannot meet. A relative with limited mobility who needs time to board, a toddler with a nap window, a nervous swimmer who wants the boat close, a mixed-age group that will not enjoy a wet RIB: these are practical reasons to pay for a boat of your own. The how to choose guide covers the shared alternatives for each.
When the honest answer is that you just want to see the cliffs and maybe a dolphin, buy the shared ticket. It shows the same coast and the same cave.
What you can change and what you cannot
You can change the start time, the direction, the pace, the number and length of photo stops, and where and how long you swim at beaches where anchoring and swimming are allowed. Food, drinks and music on board are the operator's policy, so ask. What you cannot change are the rules at Benagil, which apply to every motor boat whoever is paying.
According to the Capitania do Porto de Portimão notice (Edital 019/2024, amended by Edital 009/2025), motor boats enter Benagil cave through the west entrance for about two minutes, with a maximum of five boats inside at once. Nobody may land on the inner beach, and swimming or paddling an inflatable into the cave is forbidden. Guided kayaks and SUPs use the east entrance for about eight minutes. A skipper who promises a picnic on the sand inside is describing something illegal. What a private boat can do is wait outside the cave as long as you like and choose the moment to go in. The Benagil cave guide has the full rules.
Two more things money does not buy: dolphins, which are wild and not guaranteed, and calm sea. The skipper decides whether the boat goes out and where it can safely go on the day.
Types of private boat from Albufeira
- Small skippered boat or cabin boat. Typically six to twelve passengers, some shade, sometimes a toilet, a slower and drier ride than a RIB. The most common private cave-loop product and the best value per head for a family or friends.
- Private RIB or speedboat. The same fast, wet ride as the shared speedboat tours, with only your group on board. For adults who want to get close to the rock; no shade, no toilet, minimum ages apply.
- Catamaran charter. Space, shade, a toilet and a stable deck. The celebration and mixed-age format, usually sold by the half day or day; compare with the shared catamaran trips first.
- Motor yacht. The premium end: cabins, a galley, a swim platform, a crew of one or two. Sold by the half day or full day, often with a lunch stop at anchor. Some yachts sold to Albufeira visitors are berthed in Vilamoura.
How private charter pricing works
Private boats are priced per boat, not per person. A quote is for the boat, the skipper and a fixed number of hours, up to a passenger limit set by the boat's licence. Whether you fill twelve seats or two, the number is the same. We do not print charter rates here because they change with the season and the boat; the shared prices in our price guide are the reference to measure a quote against.
What moves the price: the length of the charter (two hours, half day, full day), the size and type of boat (RIB, cabin boat, catamaran, yacht), the month (July and August cost most), the day of the week, and extras such as catering, drinks, water toys or a return transfer. Departure marina matters too: a Vilamoura yacht may look competitive until you add taxis for a group each way.
Usually included: the boat, a skipper, life jackets and safety gear, and in most cases fuel for the agreed route. Fuel is the line to check, because some operators quote it separately or as an estimate settled after the trip. Usually extra: food and alcohol, water toys, harbour or anchoring fees, transfers, tips, and sometimes VAT. Ask for a single written total, or a formula if fuel is variable, before you pay a deposit.
Who sells private boat time from Albufeira
Five names come up when we compare private listings for Albufeira. EasyDream Charters sells private boat and yacht hours by the hour or day and is not related to Dream Wave, the shared yellow speedboat. Algarve Boat Rentals splits its offer into skippered charters and self-drive hire for licence holders. OurseaYachts sits at the premium yacht end from the Albufeira side. Elite Yacht Charters Algarve is Vilamoura-based luxury charter that markets to Albufeira visitors. Algarve Charters runs the blue Matrix speedboat on shared trips and sells yacht charter beside it.
Platforms list private options too. GetYourGuide shows a private-tour filter on some Algarve listings, Viator lists private cave and dolphin charters, and Sailo is a rental marketplace for yachts and large catamarans rather than for 2.5-hour tours. Use them to find operators and compare capacity; a direct quote often gives more detail on what is included.
How to book a private charter
You can book direct with the operator by email or phone, or through a platform. Direct usually gets you a tailored quote and more flexibility on route and extras; a platform gives you a standard product, a stated cancellation policy and payment protection. Either is fine. Paying cash to someone on the street or to a social-media profile with no company name, no written quote and no receipt is not.
Whichever route you take, get these points in writing before you pay:
- The boat's name or type and its passenger limit.
- Date, start time, duration and what happens if you overrun.
- The route or the options within it, and where swim stops are planned.
- Everything included: skipper, fuel, drinks, food, water toys, VAT.
- The exact meeting point and the marina town.
- Deposit amount, when the balance is due and how it is paid.
- The cancellation window for you and the weather policy for the operator.
- A sentence confirming the Benagil rules, so nobody expects to land inside.
Deposits are normal for private charters: a percentage on booking, the balance a few days before or on the day. If the balance is paid on the pontoon, ask for a receipt that matches the quote. Cancellation windows differ a lot: many shared tickets on GetYourGuide can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead, while private charters often need longer notice and may keep the deposit for late cancellations. Read the policy on the page or quote you are paying against.
Best time to book a private boat
The season runs April to October, with July and August the busiest and most expensive months. Book private boats weeks ahead for those months, especially weekends: there are far fewer of them than shared seats and the named yachts go first. May, June, September and early October offer warm water and more last-minute availability. In winter some operators still sell private days but many boats are out of the water for maintenance. Our best time guide has the month-by-month detail.
Time of day: morning gives the calmest sea and the smoothest cave entry, and it is also when the shared boats crowd Benagil. A private charter that starts late morning or in the afternoon meets fewer boats at the cave mouth, with a little more wind. Late afternoon into sunset is the best light, and on a private boat you can time the return to it.
Kids, seasickness and mobility on a private boat
A private boat helps with all three, within limits. The skipper can slow down, choose a calmer line and turn back early if a child is unhappy. Minimum ages and pregnancy exclusions still apply on RIBs and speedboats and are the operator's rule, so check the listing. Child life jackets are normally on board; confirm sizes for very small children.
For seasickness, the boat matters more than the ticket: a private RIB pitches exactly like a shared one, while a cabin boat, catamaran or yacht is far kinder. Choose the morning and a slower pace, and take tablets before boarding. For mobility, boarding is from a pontoon and can involve a step down; tell the operator in advance so they can pick a suitable boat and berth.
What to bring
- Swimwear under your clothes, a towel and a dry bag for phones on any open boat.
- Sun cream, a hat with a strap and sunglasses; a light windproof layer for the return.
- Water and snacks if the operator allows them; check the alcohol and glass policy.
- Your booking confirmation, the deposit receipt on your phone and ID if requested.
- Cash or card for the balance if it is due on the day.
Cancellation and weather
The skipper decides whether the boat sails; on a rough day the answer may be to go east instead of to Benagil, or not to go at all. If the operator cancels, you are normally offered a new date or a full refund including the deposit. If you cancel, the operator's window applies, and it is usually stricter than a shared ticket's. If you arrive late, the boat may wait a little because it is yours, but the hours you booked still run from the agreed start.
Where private boats leave from
Most Albufeira private charters check in at Marina de Albufeira, sometimes at a named berth rather than the public ticket desks; the marina guide has walking times, parking and taxi advice. Yachts sold by Vilamoura-based operators leave from Vilamoura Marina, a road transfer each way. Read the meeting point on the quote and put the marina town on any transfer booking.
We are an independent guide and do not sell charters; if you book a shared ticket through our GetYourGuide links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
Private boat versus shared ticket
Shared ticket
Two to six people who are happy with a fixed departure, a fixed route and other passengers on board.
- From about €30–€35 per person on the GetYourGuide listings we checked in August 2026.
- Photo stops and pace are the skipper's call, the same for everyone.
- The sensible default until the group is large or the timing matters.
Private skippered boat or RIB
Families or friends of six to twelve who want their own start time and their own route.
- Priced per boat, not per person; the more seats you fill, the closer it gets to shared prices.
- Same Benagil rules as any motor boat: about two minutes inside and no landing.
- Ask in writing whether skipper, fuel and VAT are inside the quote.
Yacht or catamaran charter
Celebrations, mixed-age groups and anyone who needs shade, a toilet and a private deck for half a day or more.
- The highest spend; a different product from a 2.5-hour cave trip.
- Some yachts sold as 'Algarve' charters depart from Vilamoura, not Albufeira.
- Confirm the departure marina, the guest limit and the cancellation window before paying a deposit.
Operators that run this format
- Algarve ChartersThe blue speedboat Matrix for a 2.5-hour caves and dolphins trip, plus the catamaran Mara and the yacht Finismar for shared or private charters from Marina de Albufeira.
- Algarve Boat RentalsBoat hire in Albufeira for private groups, listed with a skipper or as self-drive for licence holders.
- EasyDream ChartersPrivate skippered boat and yacht hire from Albufeira, priced per boat rather than per seat.
- OurseaYachts Algarve ToursPrivate premium yacht days for groups that have outgrown shared boats, booked through quotes and third-party calendars.
FAQ: Private boat tour Albufeira
How much does a private boat tour in Albufeira cost?
Private charters are quoted per boat, and a skippered boat for a few hours costs several times a shared seat, which started from about €30–€35 per person on the listings we checked in August 2026. The number moves with the boat, the hours and the month. Ask for a written total that states whether skipper, fuel and VAT are included, then divide by your group size to compare it fairly.
Is a private boat tour worth it for two people?
Usually not, unless the occasion is the point. Two people on a private boat pay the whole-boat price for the same cliffs and the same two minutes inside Benagil that a shared 2.5-hour tour shows. Private starts to make sense for a proposal, a photo session, a mobility need or a group of six or more who can split the quote.
Can a private boat stay longer inside Benagil cave?
No. The Capitania do Porto de Portimão rules apply to every motor boat regardless of who paid for it. According to the current notice, boats enter through the west entrance for about two minutes, with a maximum of five inside at once, and nobody may land on the inner beach or swim or paddle an inflatable into the cave. A private skipper can wait outside longer for photographs; that is the extra you buy.
Do I need a boat licence for a private boat tour in Albufeira?
Not for a skippered charter, which is what most private tours are: the operator supplies a licensed skipper and you are a passenger. A licence only comes into play for self-drive (bareboat) hire, which Algarve Boat Rentals and some others offer. For those, the rental company decides which licences it accepts and asks for a deposit; check that before you book.
What is included in a yacht charter from Albufeira?
Typically the boat, a skipper and the safety equipment. Fuel for the agreed route is often included but some operators quote it as a separate line, and food, drinks, water toys and harbour fees are usually extras. Every quote is different, so ask for the inclusions in writing before you pay a deposit. Our price guide explains the shared-ticket side of the comparison.
Can we bring our own food, drinks and music on a private boat?
That is the operator's decision, not a harbour rule. Some skippers welcome a cake, a picnic and a playlist at a reasonable volume; others provide the catering themselves or do not allow glass or alcohol on board. Swim stops after drinking are also at the skipper's discretion. Write what you want on the booking request so the answer is on the quote.
Where do private charters leave from, Albufeira or Vilamoura?
Both. EasyDream Charters, Algarve Boat Rentals, OurseaYachts and Algarve Charters are Albufeira names and most of their departures use Marina de Albufeira; Elite Yacht Charters is based in Vilamoura and sells to Albufeira visitors too. The meeting point on the quote is the one that counts. A Vilamoura departure adds a road transfer each way to the day, which our departure-point comparison covers.
How far ahead should I book a private charter in August?
Weeks rather than days. There are far fewer private boats than shared seats, and named yachts and the popular skippered boats are reserved first for July and August weekends. Shared tickets sell out a few days ahead in peak weeks; private boats go earlier. In April–June and September–October there is more last-minute availability, and the sea is usually calmer in the morning whichever month you choose.
What happens if the weather cancels our private charter?
The skipper decides whether the boat goes out. If the operator cancels for sea conditions you are normally offered another date or a refund of what you paid, including the deposit. If you cancel late, the operator's own window applies, and private charters often have longer notice periods and non-refundable deposits compared with the free cancellation on many shared tickets. Read that clause before you pay.
Is a private RIB better than a shared speedboat?
It is the same fast, wet ride with only your group on board and your choice of start time and route. The RIB is still a RIB: no shade, no toilet and the same minimum ages and pregnancy exclusions the operator sets. If someone in the group needs comfort rather than privacy, a skippered cabin boat or a catamaran is a better use of the same money.
