Benagil from Albufeira, Vilamoura, Portimão or Lagos: where to start

Algar de Benagil sits in the municipality of Lagoa, between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra, roughly halfway along the coast between Albufeira and Portimão. Every harbour on that stretch sells a ticket to it: Albufeira Marina, Vilamoura Marina, Portimão, Lagos, and the small boats and kayaks that launch from Benagil beach itself, from Carvoeiro and from Armação de Pêra. The cave and its rules are identical whichever you choose. What changes is how far the boat travels to reach it, how long you sit in a car first, what you see on the way and what the ticket costs.

We compared the live listings and the road distances for each start point so you can decide from where you are sleeping rather than from a thumbnail.

Where Benagil is and which harbour is nearest

By sea, Benagil is roughly 15 km west of Albufeira Marina. That is why the standard Albufeira cave boat runs west along the cliffs for the best part of an hour, spends about two minutes inside the cave and comes back the same way: the transit is the biggest share of a 2–2.5 hour ticket. From Portimão the cave is only about 8 km east, past Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, so a small boat from the Arade reaches it in far less time. From Vilamoura it is around 27 km, the longest run of the four marinas, because the boat passes Albufeira first. From Lagos it is around 21 km east, and most Lagos boats do not go that far; their grottos are at Ponta da Piedade, minutes from the marina.

By road the picture is different, because you drive to the harbour, not to the cave. From central Albufeira, Vilamoura Marina is 20–25 minutes east by car; Armação de Pêra about 20 minutes west; Carvoeiro and Benagil village 30–35 minutes; Portimão around 40 minutes on the A22 and longer on the N125 in August; Lagos 50–60 minutes. Add the same again for the return, plus the 30-minute check-in that every operator asks for.

Departure points compared

Albufeira Marina: the default if you sleep in Albufeira

Albufeira Marina is where the well-known shared boats are based: the yellow Dreamer of Dream Wave, the orange X-Ride, the blue Matrix of Algarve Charters and the catamaran Belize Terceiro of AlgarExperience. The main ticket is the 2.5-hour caves & dolphins tour, from about €34 when we checked in August 2026, rated 4.6 on around 12,700 GetYourGuide reviews. A guided version costs from about €35 (4.8), the 2–3 hour coastline & Benagil caves tour from about €30 (4.7), and the 6-hour catamaran BBQ with open bar from about €70.

The route runs west past Albufeira's own cliffs and the beaches of Galé, across the wide Armação de Pêra bay, then along the cave coast of Marinha and Benagil. The bay crossing is where the sea gets lumpy in an afternoon wind, so morning departures are kinder to anyone prone to seasickness. The dolphin search normally fills the return leg; the animals are wild and sightings are not guaranteed. Check-in is at Marina de Albufeira, and the marina guide has walking times, taxis and parking. Choose Albufeira if you sleep anywhere in Albufeira, want the widest choice of times and boats, or want a family catamaran with shade and a toilet.

Vilamoura Marina: yachts, and the longest run to the cave

Vilamoura is east of Albufeira, which puts it on the wrong side for Benagil: about 27 km by sea, so any cave trip from here spends more of the ticket in transit than the same trip from Albufeira. Three names come up in the Vilamoura search. Algarve Cave Tours sells a coast-and-caves loop from Vilamoura. Elite Yacht Charters is a luxury private charter based there, sold by the boat rather than the seat; a yacht day can still head west along the cliffs toward Benagil. Parasailing Vilamoura is a parasail flight that appears in the same results and is not a cave trip at all.

The route from Vilamoura shows the Falésia cliffs and Albufeira from the water before it reaches the cave coast. Choose Vilamoura if you are staying in Vilamoura or Quarteira, or if you want a private yacht and this is the marina you can walk to. Do not book Vilamoura from an Albufeira hotel for a cheaper-looking cave ticket: you add 20–25 minutes of road each way and more time at sea for the same two minutes inside.

Portimão and the pirate ship: the nearest harbour to the cave

Portimão is the harbour nearest Benagil: from the mouth of the Arade the cave is about 8 km east, past Ferragudo, the Praia da Rocha cliffs, Carvoeiro and the Algar Seco rock formations, so a small boat from Portimão spends its time on the cave coast rather than on a crossing. It is the obvious choice if you are sleeping in Portimão, Praia da Rocha or Alvor.

It is also the home of the pirate ship. Santa Bernarda sails from Portimão, not from Albufeira Marina. Santa Bernarda is a traditional-style ship with a costumed crew, a wide deck and half-day, full-day and sunset formats. It is family theatre on a stable deck, but a ship that size cannot enter Benagil; it looks at the cave mouths from further out. Our pirate ship guide explains what the cruise includes.

From Albufeira, Portimão is about 35 km and roughly 40 minutes by car on the A22, longer on the N125 in August. There is a regional train between Albufeira-Ferreiras and Portimão, but both stations sit outside the town centres, so you still need a taxi at each end. Some pirate ship listings sold to Albufeira visitors bundle a hotel pickup; if yours does, the pickup time is your real departure time. We do not print Portimão prices: they are set per listing and none is on the Albufeira list we checked.

Lagos: Ponta da Piedade grottos rather than Benagil

Lagos is the westernmost of the four and the furthest from Albufeira by road, about 55 km and 50–60 minutes. Its own attraction is Ponta da Piedade, a headland of golden rock pillars and grottos a few minutes from the marina, which is what most Lagos boats and kayaks visit. Lagos Grotto Trips is the name that appears in Albufeira searches for kayak and grotto trips; its products are Lagos products, not Albufeira ones. Benagil is around 21 km east of Lagos by sea, so only a few longer trips include it; read the itinerary rather than trusting a photo.

Choose Lagos if you are staying in Lagos, Luz or further west, or if you want the grotto scenery and a kayak without the Benagil queue. Do not drive from Albufeira to Lagos for a Benagil ticket: you pass Benagil on the way.

Benagil beach, Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra: closest to the water

The shortest boat ride to Benagil is the one that starts next to it. Small boats run cave circuits from Benagil beach, from Carvoeiro about 3–4 km away, and from Armação de Pêra about 6 km to the east. Guided kayak and SUP tours from operators such as Benagil Kayaks launch from the beach and reach the cave within minutes. According to the Capitania notice, guided kayaks and SUP use the east entrance and stay about eight minutes, four times the motor-boat allowance, which is why paddlers get the longest look at the roof. The catch is the road and the parking. Benagil is a small village about 25 km west of Albufeira, 30–35 minutes by car, with limited parking that fills early on summer mornings, and no public transport fits a morning launch. Choose this option if you have a car, want maximum cave time for the money, or want to paddle.

The cave rules are the same from every harbour

Access to Algar de Benagil is set by the Capitania do Porto de Portimão through Edital 019/2024 and its amendment 009/2025, and the notice applies to every boat whatever its home port. According to the Capitania notice, motor boats enter through the west entrance for about two minutes, with a maximum of five motor boats inside at once; guided kayaks and SUP use the east entrance for about eight minutes; nobody lands on the inner beach; and no swimming or inflatables may enter the cave. Dolphins are the same from every harbour too: short-beaked common and bottlenose dolphins are the species most often seen, they are wild, and no ticket guarantees them. The season runs April to October everywhere, and in July and August first morning slots sell out days ahead.

Who should choose which departure point

• Sleeping in Albufeira, no car: Albufeira Marina. Walk or take a short taxi and choose between the 2.5-hour caves & dolphins tour from about €34 and the coastline & caves tour from about €30.
• Family with small children who want shade and a toilet: an Albufeira catamaran or BBQ day from about €70, or the pirate ship if you accept the Portimão drive.
• Sleeping in Vilamoura or Quarteira: book Vilamoura. Algarve Cave Tours for a shared loop, Elite Yacht Charters for a private day.
• Sleeping in Portimão, Praia da Rocha, Alvor or Carvoeiro: book there. The cave is next door.
• Sleeping in Lagos or Luz: book Lagos for Ponta da Piedade and skip Benagil unless the itinerary names it.
• Have a car and want the most cave time: drive to Benagil or Carvoeiro for a small boat or a guided kayak, and arrive early for parking.
• Want the pirate ship specifically: it is Portimão, so plan a Portimão day around it.

Price: the ticket is only part of the cost

The Albufeira figures above are the ones we can quote, because they are on the live listings we compared in August 2026. What a headline price hides is the transfer. A cheaper ticket in another harbour plus a taxi each way for a family usually costs more than the Albufeira boat you could walk to, and it costs you the morning. Compare the total for your group, door to pontoon and back, and read the cancellation rule: if the operator cancels for weather you are refunded or rebooked; if you miss check-in because the drive ran late, you are not.

Where each boat leaves from

Albufeira tours check in at Marina de Albufeira; the marina guide has the walking times, taxis and the P3 car park. For other harbours the voucher names the exact quay or beach, so check it the night before, because several companies share the same water.
