Catamaran tour from Albufeira: caves, shade, families and prices

A catamaran tour from Albufeira is the calm choice in a marina where most of the boats are speedboats. The boat is wide, twin-hulled and slow enough to walk around on, with shade, a toilet and seats that do not slam into every wave. You see the same limestone coast the speedboats see — the cliffs west of Albufeira, the arches and the Benagil stretch — but from a deck where a six-year-old, a grandparent and a nervous swimmer can all sit comfortably. We compared the catamaran listings sold from Albufeira in August 2026; here is what they include, where they go and what they cost.

The boat most people mean is the Belize Terceiro, the catamaran run by AlgarExperience. Other large decks and motor yachts sell similar seats from the same marina, so if the Belize Terceiro is the reason you are booking, check that the listing names it. If you only need shade and a toilet, any genuine catamaran product will do.

What a catamaran cruise from Albufeira is like

The catamaran leaves Marina de Albufeira and heads west along the cliffs. The pace is slower than a speedboat: you cruise rather than bounce, and the skipper slows at the arches and cave mouths so people can move to the rail and take a wide photo. On a coastline-and-caves run the boat reaches the Benagil stretch, holds off the cave entrances for a few minutes, and cruises back. On a BBQ day the boat also anchors at a beach for lunch and a swim.

The deck is the point. A canopy or covered saloon gives real shade at midday, there is a WC on board, and the wide beam means far less roll than a small boat in the same sea. Families use the space: toddlers can be held in the shade, older children can watch from the bow, and nobody is stuck in one wet seat for two hours. Crew commentary is usually in English and Portuguese, and there is normally a small bar or a cooler on board for drinks.

Coastline and caves catamaran or catamaran BBQ day?

Two catamaran-style products dominate the Albufeira listings. The first is the coastline and Benagil caves tour: 2–3 hours, from about €30 when we checked in August 2026, rated 4.7 from about 1,200 reviews. It is the cheapest shared seat in the marina and it covers the cliffs, the arches and the Benagil cave mouths. The second is the catamaran cruise with BBQ and open bar: six hours, from about €70. That one adds a beach stop, lunch cooked on the beach, drinks and swimming time.

A third listing sits next to them in search results: the 2.5-hour caves and dolphins tour from about €34, with about 12,700 reviews at 4.6. It is the most-reviewed boat trip from Albufeira, but it may run on a different, faster boat. If the deck and the toilet are what you want, do not assume it is a catamaran — read the boat description on the listing before you pay.

Pick the coastline run if you want the cliffs and the caves in a morning and would rather spend the afternoon on a beach you chose yourself. Pick the BBQ day if the group will happily stay out for six hours and the food and the open bar are part of the plan. What the Benagil rules mean for a large boat

Benagil is regulated. According to the Capitania do Porto de Portimão notice (Edital 019/2024, amended by Edital 009/2025), motor boats enter the cave through the west entrance for about two minutes, with a maximum of five motor boats inside at once. Guided kayaks and SUPs use the east entrance for about eight minutes. Nobody lands on the inner beach, and swimming or paddling in on inflatables is banned. For a catamaran the practical answer is more conservative than the notice. A wide, heavy boat is not built to thread a cave entrance, and the listings we read describe the big boat holding at the mouth while passengers look and photograph from the deck. Some products mention a short pass inside using a smaller tender or support boat; that only applies if your listing says so, and it still counts against the two-minute limit. One expectation to set before you book: no boat ticket from Albufeira, catamaran or otherwise, lands you on the sand inside Benagil. Plan for the view from the water, and for the cliff-top viewpoint on another day if you want to look down into the cave.

What is included and what is not

On the coastline and caves catamaran, the ticket typically covers the cruise, a skipper and crew, life jackets and commentary from the crew. Drinks are sometimes sold on board rather than included; check the inclusions line. There is a toilet. There is no swim stop on most 2–3 hour coastline runs and no meal, so eat before you board.

On the catamaran BBQ day, the price typically covers the cruise, the beach barbecue lunch, an open bar for the stated hours, swimming time at the beach stop and the toilet on board. What it does not cover: hotel transfers (you make your own way to the marina), towels, and photos, which some operators sell separately. Vegetarian options exist on some BBQ listings; ask when you book, not on the day.

• Confirm the words 'toilet' or 'WC' on the listing — a large motorboat is not automatically a catamaran.
• Confirm whether a dolphin search is included. Most coastline catamaran runs are cliffs and caves only.
• Confirm the language of the briefing if anyone in the group needs it.
• Confirm whether children pay a reduced fare and from what age.

Best time for a catamaran tour

The season runs roughly April to October, and July–August is peak. Morning departures give the flattest sea, which matters for cave-mouth access and for anyone prone to seasickness. Afternoons are warmer and often windier; on a catamaran the shade makes an afternoon more comfortable than it would be on a RIB, but the sea is not calmer. Booking lead time: in July and August the morning coastline seats sell out days ahead, and the BBQ catamaran day fills earlier still because it runs fewer departures. Kids, seasickness and mobility

Children: most catamaran listings accept children from toddlers upward and price under-12s lower, but the listing is the rule. Infants generally need the operator's approval when you book. The BBQ day is long for very small children; the two-to-three-hour coastline run suits them better.

Seasickness: a catamaran rolls less than a small boat, and that is the main reason to choose it. It is not immune. Take the morning departure, sit near the middle of the boat, keep your eyes on the horizon and eat a light breakfast. If anyone has been sick on a ferry before, take medication before boarding, not after.

Mobility: boarding a catamaran is usually easier than a RIB — you step from the pontoon onto a wide, level deck rather than climbing over a tube into a bench seat. That said, pontoons slope with the tide, gangways vary and decks get wet. 'Stable' is not the same as 'step-free'. Pregnant passengers are usually accepted on catamarans where they are refused on speedboats, but again, the listing decides. Write to the operator before you pay if anyone needs a ramp, a wheelchair space or help boarding; we cannot certify access.

• Shoes that grip: catamaran decks are drier than a RIB but still get wet.
• A layer for the return leg; the breeze picks up in the afternoon even in August.
• Sun cream and a hat — the shade covers part of the deck, not the bow.
• Swimwear and a towel on the BBQ day.
• Water on the coastline run if the listing does not include drinks.

Cancellation, weather and check-in

The skipper decides. If the sea is too rough the operator cancels, and on GetYourGuide you are refunded or rebooked. If you miss check-in, you are not; the boat leaves on time.
