The catamaran Belize Terceiro: shade, a toilet and a stable deck for Benagil trips, BBQ days and sunset cruises from Marina de Albufeira.

Who AlgarExperience are and what they run

AlgarExperience is one of the largest boat-trip brands on this stretch of coast. Albufeira trips check in at Marina de Albufeira, and the operator's own website also lists departures from the marinas of Vilamoura, Lagos and Portimão. The site shows a tourism licence (RNAAT 265/2010) and a cetacean-watching permit (AOC/25/2023), which matters on any trip that sells a dolphin search. We are an independent guide and do not sell tickets; the figures below are from when we checked in August 2026.

The boat most people ask about is the catamaran Belize Terceiro: a wide, stable deck with shade and a toilet on board, which is why families and mixed-age groups choose it over a RIB. The Albufeira programme on the operator's site also included a RIB version of the dolphins and caves trip, a 3-hour coastline trip, a Benagil sunset trip and private hires. A brunch-and-caves trip with open bar and a sunset food-tasting night with DJ and open bar were the two products the site flagged as best sellers.

Tours and formats, and which guide covers each

The core product is the dolphins and Benagil caves trip by catamaran, listed as up to 2.5 hours. You motor west along the cliffs, stop off the cave for the short look inside that the rules allow, then head out to open water to look for dolphins. Sightings are not guaranteed; the operator says so and so do we. Our Benagil cave guide explains what you see from the water and what you do not. The operator's site showed this trip from about €35, and the 3-hour coastline version from about €30.

  • Coastline and caves (3 h): the slower trip without the dolphin search. On GetYourGuide the coastline and Benagil caves tour was from about €30, rated 4.7 from around 1,200 reviews, when we checked.
  • Catamaran BBQ day (6 h): cliffs, caves, a swim stop and a beach barbecue with open bar, from about €70 on GetYourGuide. Our BBQ boat trip guide explains what those days include and what they do not.
  • Sunset trips (3 h): the same coast in evening light, with a food-tasting and DJ version on some dates.
  • Water sports: the operator's site has a Water Sports section, and third-party listings under the brand name include jet ski, parasailing and glass-bottom trips. Read our jet ski and parasailing guide and our glass-bottom boat guide before you assume the check-in desk is the same as for the catamaran.
  • Private hire: the 2.5-hour dolphins and caves trip and a 2-hour coastline trip can be booked as a private boat; the site quoted from €500 and from €400 respectively. Our private tours guide compares that with the yacht charters.

What the catamaran can and cannot do at Benagil

A catamaran is still a motor boat, so the Capitania do Porto de Portimão rules apply. According to the Capitania notice (Edital 019/2024, amended by 009/2025), motor boats enter Benagil through the west entrance for about two minutes, with a maximum of five boats inside at once. No boat lands on the inner beach, and nobody swims or paddles an inflatable in from a boat. A larger boat may hold further off the entrance than a RIB, so if being close to the cave mouth is the point of your day, weigh that in the comparison below.

What the catamaran gives instead is the coastline: the cliffs west of Albufeira, the beaches around Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro, and a calmer platform for photographs. On BBQ days the anchored swim stop is where most of the day is spent, not the two minutes in the cave.

Who AlgarExperience suits, and who should look elsewhere

Pick this operator if someone in your group needs shade, a toilet or a stable deck: small children, grandparents, anyone unsure about seasickness. Morning departures are calmer than afternoon ones. It is also the natural choice for a full BBQ day, because the same type of boat does the short trip and the long one, so you know what the deck is like. Portuguese-speaking visitors will find the site and most crews work in Portuguese; the listing states which languages the guide uses on each departure.

Look elsewhere if you want the fast, wet run in a named speedboat. That is Dream Wave with the yellow Dreamer or X-Ride with the orange boat; our speedboat and RIB guide compares them. If you want to be inside the cave for longer than a motor boat is allowed, only a guided kayak or SUP does that, through the east entrance for about eight minutes.

Where AlgarExperience checks in

Albufeira trips check in at Marina de Albufeira; our marina guide covers the walk from the Old Town, taxis, parking and what to do if you are running late. Because the brand also sells from Vilamoura, Lagos and Portimão, check the marina name on your voucher before you set off: a Vilamoura ticket will not be honoured at the Albufeira pontoon.

How to book and what to check on the listing

You can book direct on algarexperience.com or through GetYourGuide, Viator and the other platforms; the price is usually the same and the cancellation rules are on the listing. Aggregator titles blur "catamaran", "caves", "BBQ" and "Albufeira" into one line, which is how people end up on a RIB when they wanted the Belize Terceiro. Before you pay, check:

  • Boat type: catamaran or RIB. Photos of a wide white deck with a net at the bow mean the catamaran; photos of a speedboat with inflatable sides do not.
  • Dolphin search included, or a coastline-only trip.
  • Departure marina: Albufeira, Vilamoura, Lagos or Portimão.
  • Food and drink: BBQ with open bar, brunch, food tasting, or nothing beyond water.
  • Child prices and age bands on the listing itself, not on a hotel poster.
  • Cancellation: the skipper cancels for weather and you are refunded or rebooked; if you miss check-in, you are not.

Peak weeks in July and August sell out days ahead, and BBQ days go first because there is one departure a day. Book two or three days ahead in August, earlier for a BBQ day with a large group.

How AlgarExperience compares with the nearest alternatives

Algarve Charters is the closest like-for-like: it runs the catamaran Mara and the sailing yacht Finismar from the same marina, with a 3-hour caves trip and a 6-hour beach BBQ cruise, and it also has the blue speedboat Matrix. If AlgarExperience is full, that is the first place to look for the same format. For BBQ days, Atlantic Quest is the other established Albufeira name; compare duration, what is grilled and whether there is an open bar. For a speedboat, Dream Wave and X-Ride are the two to compare.

Whichever you pick, prices, times and free seats change through the week. The figures on this page are from August 2026; the live listing is the rule.

FAQ: AlgarExperience

Which AlgarExperience boat is the Belize Terceiro?

The Belize Terceiro is AlgarExperience's named catamaran: a wide twin-deck boat with shade, seating and a toilet on board, used for the Benagil and dolphin trips and the BBQ days from Marina de Albufeira. Listings do not always print the boat name, so look for the word catamaran and photos of a white deck with a net at the bow rather than a speedboat.

Does the AlgarExperience catamaran go inside Benagil cave?

Briefly. Under the Capitania notice, motor boats enter through the west entrance for about two minutes, with at most five inside at once, and nobody lands on the inner beach or swims in from a boat. A catamaran may hold a little further off the entrance than a RIB. If a long time inside the cave is the goal, a guided kayak trip is the only format that gets about eight minutes.

Is there a toilet and shade on the AlgarExperience catamaran?

Yes on the catamaran, which is the main reason families choose it over a speedboat. There is no toilet on the RIB trips, and the jet ski, parasailing and glass-bottom products sold under the same name are different boats with their own rules. If either matters to you, confirm the boat type on the listing before paying, not on the day.

Does AlgarExperience run in winter?

The boat-trip season on this coast is April to October, with July and August the busiest. Outside those months the operator's calendar shows what is on sale, and departures depend on sea state; the skipper decides on the day. If a winter trip is cancelled by the operator you are refunded or rebooked, so booking ahead carries little risk, but do not plan a whole day around it.

What is the minimum age on AlgarExperience trips?

Catamaran trips typically accept all ages, with infants on a lap and child prices for younger children; the RIB trips and the water sports have higher minimum ages and sometimes a minimum height. The listing is the rule: check the age bands and child price before you pay, and tell the operator about pregnancy or reduced mobility, which affect the RIB more than the catamaran.

Where does AlgarExperience check in for Albufeira trips?

At Marina de Albufeira, with check-in before departure at the operator's desk there; our marina guide covers walking times from the Old Town, taxis and parking. The same brand also departs from Vilamoura, Lagos and Portimão, so read the marina name on your voucher. Boats leave on time and a missed check-in is not refunded.

Can I book AlgarExperience direct instead of on GetYourGuide?

Yes. The operator sells on algarexperience.com and through GetYourGuide, Viator and other platforms; prices are usually the same. Platforms give you a single place to compare boats and a clear cancellation window, which is why our widgets link there, but booking direct works too. Whichever you use, check the boat type, marina and what food is included.

Does AlgarExperience do jet ski, parasailing and glass-bottom trips?

The operator's site has a Water Sports section and third-party listings under the AlgarExperience name include jet ski, parasailing and glass-bottom trips. These are separate products from the catamaran, with their own check-in, age rules and durations, so read the listing as its own ticket. Our jet ski and parasailing guide and glass-bottom boat guide explain what each includes.
