A sunset cruise from Albufeira is one of three quite different boat trips sold under the same name: a short coastline cruise timed to end as the sun goes down, usually on a catamaran with a drink included; a late-afternoon speedboat or RIB run along the cliffs; and a six-hour beach BBQ that leaves after lunch and returns to the marina in the last light. They differ in price, boat, length and who they suit. This guide covers departure times by month, what each ticket includes, the drinks rules, what to wear, and what the listings cost when we checked in August 2026.
One thing first: sunset in Albufeira moves by more than three hours between April and late October, so there is no fixed sunset boat time. Operators shift departures with the sun; the listing for your date shows the time.
Three kinds of sunset boat trip from Albufeira
Short sunset coastline cruise. Usually two to three hours on a shared catamaran or a large-deck boat such as AlgarExperience's Belize Terceiro. The boat follows the limestone cliffs west towards Praia da Galé and Armação de Pêra or east towards the red cliffs of Falésia, depending on the operator and the sea, then turns to face the sun for the last half hour. There is shade, a toilet, seating for everyone and, on most listings, a welcome drink. These cruises are built for light and views rather than caves or dolphins, and they rarely go as far as Benagil. See the catamaran guide for the big boats.
Late speedboat or RIB. The same boats that run the morning cave trips — Dream Wave's yellow Dreamer, the orange X-Ride, Algarve Charters' blue Matrix — take a final departure in the late afternoon. Expect two to two and a half hours, a fast and wet ride, no shade and no toilet. Some listings still reach Benagil before dark; others stay closer to Albufeira. The attraction is the boat in evening light and the spray, not a drink in hand. The speedboat and RIB guide covers minimum ages.
Six-hour beach BBQ ending at sunset. The boat cruises to a beach, the crew grills, there is time to swim and sunbathe, and the return is timed for the last light. GetYourGuide lists a six-hour sunset beach BBQ and a catamaran cruise with BBQ and open bar on the beach, both from about €70 when we checked in August 2026. Food is the product here; the sunset is the finish. The BBQ boat trip guide covers menus and the swim stop.
- Short sunset cruise: 2–3 hours, catamaran, drink usually included, light and views.
- Late speedboat or RIB: 2–2.5 hours, fast and wet, named boats, no drinks or toilet.
- Beach BBQ day: 6 hours, food and drinks on a beach, swim time, back at sunset, from about €70.
Departure times by month
Operators place a sunset cruise so that the boat is on the water for the last hour of sun and back at the pontoon shortly after it sets. The table gives rounded sunset times for Albufeira from published sun tables and our estimate of when a two-hour cruise leaves; the listing for your date is the rule.
| Month | Sunset in Albufeira (approx.) | Typical 2-hour cruise departure |
|---|---|---|
| April | 20:00–20:25 | 18:00–18:30 |
| May | 20:25–20:50 | 18:30–19:00 |
| June | 20:50–21:00 | 19:00 |
| July | 20:45–21:00 | 19:00 |
| August | 20:10–20:45 | 18:30 |
| September | 19:20–20:05 | 17:30–18:00 |
| October | 19:15 falling to about 17:45 after winter time starts | 16:30–17:30 |
Two practical consequences. In June and July a short cruise gets you back after 21:00, so plan a late dinner and think twice with small children. In April and October the same cruise is over before 18:30. The six-hour BBQ works backwards from the same sunset: a July BBQ leaves around 15:00, an October one around midday.
What is included and what is not
Every boat carries life jackets; on a RIB you wear one, on a catamaran they are stowed and shown at the safety talk. Commentary is usually brief and in English, with Portuguese from most crews. Toilets exist on the catamarans and the larger BBQ boats, not on speedboats.
Photos are a common upsell: some operators have a crew member taking pictures and sell them afterwards, and a few listings include a digital set. If the listing is silent, assume photos cost extra. A swim stop is part of the BBQ day and occasionally of a longer sunset cruise in high summer, but the standard short cruise has no swim: the water is cooler by evening and the light is the point.
Drinks policy
Most catamaran sunset cruises include one welcome drink, typically sparkling wine, sangria or a soft drink, and sell more from a bar on board. Speedboat sunset trips include nothing; bring water. The BBQ listings include drinks with the meal, and the catamaran version advertises an open bar on the beach, which in our reading covers beer, wine, sangria and soft drinks rather than spirits; confirm on the listing. Bringing your own alcohol is normally not allowed, water is always fine, and the skipper can refuse boarding to anyone clearly drunk.
- Included on most short cruises: skipper and crew, life jackets, one drink, toilet, shade.
- Included on BBQ days: the meal, drinks with it, swim time, beach transfer by the boat itself.
- Not included unless the listing says so: photos, extra drinks, hotel pick-up, cave entry, a dolphin search.
- Never included: landing inside Benagil cave, swimming into it, or a guaranteed clear sky.
Couples, families, groups: which sunset boat fits
Couples usually want the short catamaran cruise: a seat on the foredeck, a drink, the cliffs turning orange and a table booked in the Old Town for afterwards. A private charter is the upgrade if you want the boat to yourselves, and it only makes sense on price at eight to twelve people.
Families with young children do best on the same catamaran, ideally in May, early June or September when the boat is back before bedtime. Speedboat listings normally set a minimum age and exclude pregnant passengers and people with back problems. The six-hour BBQ suits children of about eight and up who swim confidently; below that it is a long afternoon.
Groups are the natural market for the BBQ: a shared meal, a beach, drinks and a sunset return give a party a full afternoon for one price. Teenagers and thrill-seekers prefer the late RIB. Anyone prone to seasickness should know that the early-evening sea is often calmer than mid-afternoon but not the flattest of the day; the morning is. For a mixed group, our how-to-choose guide works through the trade-offs.
Sunset cruise prices and what moves them
The clearest price points are the BBQ products: the six-hour sunset beach BBQ, the beach BBQ day and the catamaran BBQ with open bar all started from about €70 on GetYourGuide when we checked in August 2026. That is the top of the shared-boat range, and it buys a meal, drinks and six hours, not just the sunset. Short sunset cruises are priced per listing and we do not quote a single figure; compare them with the daytime coastline and Benagil caves trip from about €30 and the 2.5-hour caves and dolphins trip from about €34 to see what the evening premium is on your date.
- Month and day: a Saturday in August costs more than a Tuesday in May on the same boat.
- Named boat: a listing that guarantees the Dreamer or the Belize Terceiro usually costs more than a generic sunset ticket.
- Inclusions: one drink is cheap for the operator; a meal and an open bar are what push a ticket to €70.
- Children: some listings show a child price, usually up to about 12; there is no marina-wide family rate.
Do not book a six-hour BBQ when the group only wanted a drink and a photograph; match the ticket to the hours you will enjoy on the water. Our price guide lists every format side by side.
What to wear: it gets cool after sunset
The most useful line on this page: bring a layer. The air over the water is cooler than in town, the breeze picks up as the land cools, and the ride back after sunset feels chilly even in August. A windproof jacket or a fleece and something to cover bare legs, trousers or a sarong over swimwear, keep the last half hour pleasant. In April, May and October add a proper jacket.
- Shoes with grip: trainers or sandals that strap on. No flip-flops on a RIB, no heels on any deck.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses for the first hour; the sun is low and straight in your eyes.
- A waterproof layer on a speedboat, where spray reaches every seat.
- Swimwear, a towel and dry clothes for the BBQ day.
- Phone on a lanyard or in a dry bag; a small bag only, as there is no luggage space.
Getting the photos
The best light on the cliffs comes in the 30–40 minutes before the sun touches the horizon, when the limestone turns orange and the sea goes flat gold. From Albufeira the sun drops over the water to the west, so stand on the side facing the coast for cliff shots and move to the bow for the sun itself. Skip the flash and stay on deck ten minutes after the sun goes: the afterglow and the silhouettes of other boats are often better than the sunset. On a RIB, shoot before the fast leg home; salt spray on a lens ruins everything after it.
Best months and how far ahead to book
Regular sunset departures run from roughly April to October, with July and August as the peak. June and July have the latest sunsets; August is the busiest and most expensive; September keeps a warm sea with fewer people on deck; April, May and October are the quietest and coolest, with the earliest finishes. In winter do not assume a daily sunset cruise exists; the live calendar is the only way to know. The best time guide has the month-by-month table.
In peak weeks the pretty slots go first: named speedboats and Saturday BBQ dates sell out days ahead, then the catamaran sunset seats. For July and August book two to three days in advance once the group agrees on a date, earlier if the boat name matters. Outside peak, a day ahead is usually enough, and a weekday in May or late September will be cheaper than any summer Saturday.
Caves, dolphins, weather and cancellations
If your sunset listing includes the caves, the same rules apply as in the morning. According to the Capitania do Porto de Portimão notice (Edital 019/2024, amended by 009/2025), motor boats enter Benagil through the west entrance for about two minutes, with at most five motor boats inside at once; guided kayaks and SUP use the east entrance for about eight minutes; nobody lands on the inner beach and nobody swims or floats into the cave. A skipper who promises to stay inside for the sunset is promising something the notice does not allow; the Benagil cave guide has the detail.
Dolphins are wild and no sunset listing guarantees them. Most short cruises follow the coast without a dedicated open-water search, so treat any sighting as a bonus and book a morning dolphin watching trip if that is what the group wants.
The skipper decides on the day, and a calm-looking evening can still be cancelled for offshore swell. If the operator cancels, you are refunded or moved to another date. Cloud is not a cancellation reason: the boat sails and a grey sunset is not refundable. If you miss check-in, the boat leaves and you are not refunded. Many GetYourGuide listings allow free cancellation up to about 24 hours before departure; the listing states the exact window.
How to book and where the boat leaves
Compare two or three sunset listings for your date and check four lines: the boat name, the drinks or meal inclusions, the duration and the cancellation window. If the yellow Dreamer or the Belize Terceiro is the point of the evening, the listing has to name it; a generic sunset boat trip can put you on a different deck. The widgets on this page show GetYourGuide because it is our affiliate partner and carries the sunset BBQ, beach BBQ and catamaran BBQ listings; Viator, CheckYeti and others sell overlapping seats.
All three formats leave from Marina de Albufeira, on the western edge of town. Walking times, taxis, parking and what to do if you are late are in the marina guide.

FAQ: Sunset cruise Albufeira
What time does the sunset cruise leave Albufeira?
It depends on the month, because operators time the boat to the sun. Sunset in Albufeira is close to 21:00 in June and July, about 20:30 in mid-August, near 19:45 in mid-September and around 17:45 once winter time starts in late October. A two-hour cruise therefore leaves around 19:00 in high summer and closer to 17:00 in late October. The listing shows the exact time for your date.
How much is a sunset boat trip in Albufeira?
The six-hour sunset beach BBQ and the catamaran BBQ with open bar both started from about €70 on GetYourGuide when we checked in August 2026. Short two-to-three-hour sunset cruises are priced per listing and usually sit well below that; compare them with the €30 coastline trip to judge the evening premium. Prices move with the month and the day of the week.
Is a drink included on the sunset cruise?
On most catamaran sunset cruises, yes: one welcome drink, typically sparkling wine, sangria or a soft drink, with more available from the bar for a charge. Speedboat and RIB sunset trips normally include no drinks at all. The beach BBQ listings include drinks with the meal, and one advertises an open bar on the beach. Read the inclusions line before you book.
Can I bring my own alcohol on board?
Usually not. Most operators ask you not to bring your own alcohol, and the skipper can refuse boarding to anyone who is clearly drunk, which is a safety rule at sea rather than a sales tactic. Bottled water is fine on every boat. If the group wants to keep drinking after the sun goes, plan for the marina bars once you dock.
Is it cold on a sunset boat trip in Albufeira?
Cooler than you expect, even in August. The breeze over the water and the temperature drop after sunset mean the ride back feels noticeably chilly, and a speedboat adds spray. Bring a windproof layer and something to cover bare legs, and skip flip-flops on a RIB. In April, May and October a light jacket is not optional; it is the difference between enjoying the last half hour and hiding below deck.
Is a sunset cruise good for kids?
The short catamaran cruise is the family-friendly choice: a stable deck, a toilet, seats and a fixed end time. In June and July the boat docks after 21:00, which is late for small children; May or September sunsets are earlier. Speedboat listings usually set a minimum age, and the six-hour BBQ is a long day for anyone under about eight. Child prices appear on some listings, and the listing is the rule.
Do sunset boats from Albufeira go to Benagil cave?
Most short sunset cruises do not; they stay along the cliffs closer to Albufeira and are built around the light. Some late speedboat listings do reach Benagil before dark. Inside the cave the Capitania rules apply at any hour: motor boats enter through the west entrance for about two minutes, at most five boats at a time, and nobody lands on the inner beach or swims in.
Will we see dolphins on a sunset cruise?
Possibly, but do not book for it. Sunset cruises follow the coast and rarely include a dedicated open-water search, so any sighting is a bonus. Dolphins are wild and no operator guarantees them. If seeing dolphins matters more than the light, book a dolphin watching trip in the morning, when the sea is usually calmer and the search time is part of the ticket.
What happens if the sunset is cloudy or the trip is cancelled?
Clouds are not a cancellation reason; the boat sails and you are not refunded for a grey sky. Wind and swell are different: the skipper decides on the day, and if the operator cancels you are refunded or moved to another date. If you miss check-in you lose the ticket. Many GetYourGuide listings allow free cancellation up to about 24 hours before departure; the listing states the exact window.
Sunset cruise or beach BBQ: which should a couple choose?
For most couples the short catamaran cruise wins: two to three hours, a drink in hand, the cliffs turning orange, and dinner afterwards in the Old Town. The BBQ is a six-hour social afternoon with a shared meal and a swim stop, better for groups and families. If the group only wanted the light and a photograph, the cheaper short cruise is the right ticket.
