Albufeira boat trips in April and October
April and October are the months people ask us about most, because flights are cheaper and the calendars still show boats. Both work. Both need a spare morning.
In April the boats are back but the Atlantic has not fully settled. Cave and dolphin boats run most days. Kayak tours are cancelled more often than in summer, because a swell that a speedboat rides comfortably is a swell that fills a kayak at the cave entrance. The water is about 16–17 °C, so a swim stop is short. Sunset and BBQ products are usually still off the calendar or run only on selected dates. Easter week is the exception to the quiet: it fills, and prices, like a summer week.
In October the sea is still warmer than in April, around 19–20 °C early in the month, which is why late-season swimmers prefer it. The trade-off is weather: the first autumn fronts bring swell and wind, and a run of two or three cancelled mornings is normal. Cave and dolphin boats keep going on fine days; kayaks and the smallest speedboats are the first to be stood down. Morning, afternoon or sunset?
Morning is the safer bet in every month. The Algarve south coast usually wakes up calm; the sea breeze builds from late morning and peaks in mid-afternoon. The first departure therefore gets the flattest water, the least spray on a speedboat, the lowest seasickness risk and the shortest queue at the Benagil cave entrance. If you have one shot at the cave photo or a dolphin search, take the first departure.
Afternoon departures are hotter, windier and choppier on average. On a catamaran that matters little; on a speedboat it means more bounce and more spray. Afternoon also puts you at the cave when the most boats are queuing. The upside is a warmer swim stop and an easier taxi to the marina.
Sunset departures are a different product: light on the cliffs, drinks on board, sometimes a beach BBQ. They are not a cheaper cave tour, and they are the weakest dolphin search, because the skipper has less time and less light. How far ahead to book, by month
Lead time depends on the month and on how particular you are about the boat. A seat on some boat is available almost every day of the season. What sells out is the first morning departure on a named speedboat: the yellow Dreamer, the orange X-Ride, the blue Matrix.
- April, May and October: one or two days is usually enough. Easter and half-term weeks: three to five days.
- June and September: three to five days for the morning slot, longer for weekends.
- July and August: five to seven days for the first departure, and a week or more for the peak weeks of early August. Afternoon seats and coastline-only tours stay available longer.

- November to March: book once you see a date open. If you must commit early, choose a private charter with a clear weather policy.
Prices follow the same curve. When we checked in August 2026, the 2.5-hour caves & dolphins tour started from about €34, the coastline-only tour from about €30, the guided kayak tour from about €32 and six-hour BBQ days from about €70. Peak weeks price higher and shoulder weekdays lower, on the same boats.
What happens when the weather is bad
Wind and swell cancel more trips than rain. A grey, drizzly morning with a flat sea often goes ahead; a sunny morning with a metre of swell may not, because the Benagil cave entrance and the exposed stretch of coast beyond Armação de Pêra become unsafe for small boats. The skipper or the operator decides, usually the evening before or early on the day, and you are told by message or email.
If the operator cancels, the listing normally offers a full refund or a move to another date. If you cancel because you do not like the forecast, the listing's own window applies: often free up to 24 hours before, sometimes not. If you miss check-in, you are not refunded. In April and October the practical rule is to keep the next morning free, so a cancelled trip becomes a moved trip rather than a lost one.
What gets cancelled first
- Kayak and SUP tours: first to be stood down; they need the calmest water at the cave.
- Speedboat cave tours: next; they run in a moderate chop but skip the cave entry if the entrance is rough.
- Catamaran and coastline tours: most tolerant of chop, though a big swell keeps them in port too.
- BBQ days: need a usable beach, so a strong onshore wind can cancel a sunny day.
Best month for dolphins, for the cave photo and for swimming
Dolphins
There is no dolphin month. Short-beaked common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins are off the Algarve all year, and sightings are never guaranteed. What changes is your odds of a comfortable search: a calm sea makes fins easier to spot and gives the skipper more time to look. That points to morning departures from May to September, with June and September slightly ahead because the afternoon breeze arrives later. The cave photo
The cave photo depends on light and on the queue. The sun comes through the roof opening at Benagil most strongly around the middle of the day, which is also when the line of boats is longest. A first-morning departure in April, May, late September or October gives you the cave with few other boats but softer light. A mid-morning departure in high summer gives brighter light and, according to the Capitania notice, about two minutes inside shared with up to five motor boats. For most people a morning slot in May, June or September is the best compromise.
Swimming
For a swim stop, July to mid-October. Sea temperature peaks in August and September at about 21–22 °C; June is fine for adults and cool for small children; April and May are for the brave. Kayak tours with a swim stop and BBQ days make the most sense from June onward.
Kids, heat and the long days
Between late June and early September the Algarve regularly reaches 30 °C by lunchtime, and an open speedboat has no shade. For children the first morning departure matters twice: calmer water, and a return before the heat peaks. A catamaran or a coastline boat with a covered area is the better afternoon choice for a family. Bring water, hats and sun cream on every trip. Operators supply life jackets; none supply shade on an open speedboat.
Minimum ages vary by boat. Listings we saw typically set a minimum of around four to six years on speedboats, take younger children on catamarans and coastline boats, and require a minimum age and a swimmer on kayaks.
