Who Lagos Grotto Trips are and what they run

Lagos Grotto Trips is a small-boat and kayak operator in Lagos, at the western end of the Algarve, and its website says it has run trips for more than ten years. When we checked in August 2026 the site listed four shared products and private versions of each: a grotto boat trip at Ponta da Piedade, a boat trip to Benagil, dolphin watching, and a guided kayak tour at Ponta da Piedade. The CheckYeti listings we saw describe the Benagil trip as a RIB and give Lagos Marina as the start; the operator's own site says only that its boats are safe and comfortable and names no vessels, so we do not either.

We are an independent guide and do not sell their tickets. The website gives a company address in Ferragudo, near Portimão; that is an office, not where you board.

They do not leave from Albufeira Marina

If you found this page from an Albufeira hotel, start here. Lagos Grotto Trips run from Lagos, on the far side of Portimão, and nothing on their site mentions a pick-up from Albufeira. Lagos is a long way west: the best part of an hour each way by car on the A22, longer on the coast road, and well over an hour by public transport with a change. For a 75-minute grotto trip that is more time in a car than on the water, and the Benagil trip from Lagos heads east to the same cave that the Albufeira boats reach heading west.

It is a good plan for two kinds of Albufeira visitor: someone with a hire car who wants a day in Lagos and at Ponta da Piedade and takes a boat or kayak while there, and someone moving on to the western Algarve anyway. It is a poor plan if the boat is the only reason for the journey. Our departure points comparison puts Albufeira, Vilamoura, Lagos and Portimão side by side for transfer time and what each route shows.

Boats, kayaks and Benagil: the products

The operator's site publishes durations, from-prices and minimum ages; the platform you pay on may differ, so treat the listing as the rule. Prices below are what the site showed when we checked in August 2026.

  • Ponta da Piedade grotto trip: 1 hour 15 minutes in a small boat that goes into the grottos, all ages, from about €20.
  • Benagil by boat: 2 hours, minimum age 6, from about €39, a RIB on the CheckYeti card. This is their version of the Benagil cave tour.
  • Dolphin watching: 1.5 hours, minimum age 5, from about €39. Sightings are never guaranteed.
  • Guided kayak tour at Ponta da Piedade: 2 hours with a captain and local guide, life jackets, a 10-minute swim, a maximum of 12 people, minimum age 4, from about €40.
  • Private boat, kayak and dolphin trips: the same routes with the whole boat or group.

They do not list stand-up paddle. If a paddle session is what you want and you are staying in Albufeira, our kayak and SUP guide covers the guided sea-cave kayak from Albufeira, from about €32 for two hours, with no transfer.

Ponta da Piedade is not Benagil

Listings for Lagos boats often carry a Benagil photograph because the name sells. The rock you see on the 75-minute grotto trip and on the kayak tour is Ponta da Piedade, the headland of arches and grottos just south of Lagos, and a small boat can go inside those grottos in a way the Benagil rules no longer allow. The Benagil trip is a separate, longer product. According to the Capitania do Porto de Portimão notice (Edital 019/2024, amended by 009/2025), motor boats enter Benagil through the west entrance for about two minutes, at most five inside at once, with no landing on the inner beach and no swimming or inflatables into the cave; guided kayaks use the east entrance for about eight minutes.

Read the name of the rock on the card before you share it with the group, so nobody expects the Benagil dome on a Piedade ticket, or a beach landing on a Benagil one. Our caves and coastline guide explains what a coast run shows between the two.

Who this operator suits

Book Lagos Grotto Trips if you are staying in Lagos, Luz or Alvor, or you are in Albufeira with a car and want a Lagos day with a boat in it. The short grotto trip is a good fit for families with small children, since it takes all ages and lasts just over an hour, and the guided kayak suits anyone who wants to paddle into grottos rather than watch them from a motor boat.

Pick an Albufeira operator if the boat is the whole plan and you have no car: Dream Wave and the rest of the marina fleet run the caves and dolphins loop from about €34 with no transfer. Pick Benagil Kayaks if paddling into Benagil itself is the goal, and accept that sector's rules. Pick Albufeira Caves Kayak if you want a paddle close to the hotel.

Where they check in

The listings we saw name Lagos Marina as the start; the operator's site does not state a boarding point, so confirm the exact meeting place on the voucher before you travel. They do not use Marina de Albufeira; if your other trips leave from there, see our marina guide. In Lagos, allow time for the walk from the car park to the marina pontoons and for the footbridge over the river from the town side.

How to book and what to check on the listing

Kayak and grotto searches mix Lagos, Benagil and Albufeira in one grid. Filter by departure town and craft, then check:

  • Departure town: Lagos. If the card says Albufeira, it is a different operator.
  • Boat or kayak: the brand runs both, and the price and minimum age differ.
  • Which rock the title names: Ponta da Piedade or Benagil.
  • Minimum age on the card: 4 for the kayak, 5 for dolphins, 6 for Benagil on the operator's site.
  • What is included: the kayak page lists a guide, life jackets and a swim; the boat pages list less.
  • Weather: the skipper decides; an operator cancellation is refunded or rebooked, a missed check-in is not.

Reviews for small western operators are few, so one bad week can colour the page; our reviews guide explains what to read into a short list.

How they compare with Benagil Kayaks, Albufeira Caves Kayak and Algarve Cave Tours

Benagil Kayaks is the paddle comparison inside the Benagil sector, closer to Albufeira and under the Portimão notice. Albufeira Caves Kayak is the paddle on the Albufeira side with no transfer. Algarve Cave Tours is the same kind of out-of-town departure in the other direction, from Vilamoura. Pick the town first: for Albufeira guests the honest order is Albufeira, then Benagil or Vilamoura, then Lagos.

FAQ: Lagos Grotto Trips

Does Lagos Grotto Trips leave from Albufeira?

No. Lagos Grotto Trips run from Lagos, at the western end of the Algarve, and the listings we saw name Lagos Marina as the start. Nothing on their site mentions a pick-up from Albufeira, so a guest staying there needs a car each way, the best part of an hour on the A22. Our departure points comparison shows what that costs against a boat from Marina de Albufeira.

How do I get from Albufeira to Lagos for the boat?

By hire car on the A22, which takes the best part of an hour each way, or by taxi at a price that will rival the ticket. Public transport takes well over an hour with a change and does not suit an early departure. Most Albufeira visitors who use this operator build it into a full day in Lagos rather than driving there and straight back for a 75-minute trip.

Is the Ponta da Piedade grotto trip the same as Benagil?

No. Ponta da Piedade is the headland of arches and grottos just south of Lagos, and the 75-minute trip stays there; the operator sells Benagil as a separate two-hour boat trip. A small boat can go into the Piedade grottos, while at Benagil the Capitania notice limits motor boats to about two minutes through the west entrance. See our Benagil cave guide before you choose between the two.

Does Lagos Grotto Trips run kayak tours, and are they guided?

Yes. When we checked in August 2026 the site listed a two-hour guided kayak tour at Ponta da Piedade with a captain and local guide, life jackets, a 10-minute swim, a maximum of 12 people and a minimum age of 4, plus a private version. They do not list stand-up paddle. For a guided kayak with no transfer from Albufeira, see our kayak and SUP guide.

What is the minimum age on Lagos Grotto Trips?

It depends on the product. On the operator's site the Ponta da Piedade grotto trip takes all ages, the kayak tour is for ages 4 and over, dolphin watching 5 and over, and the Benagil boat trip 6 and over. The platform you book on may set different limits, so the listing is the rule; ask before booking with a baby or a child close to the cut-off.

Do the boats go inside the grottos at Ponta da Piedade?

Yes. The operator's page for the 75-minute trip says passengers enter the caves, which is the point of the product: the Piedade grottos are small, close together and open to small boats in a way Benagil no longer is. Sea state decides on the day, and the skipper can skip a grotto if the swell is wrong. Bring a windbreaker; the operator advises one on windy days.

Where exactly do Lagos Grotto Trips boats leave from in Lagos?

The CheckYeti listings we saw say Lagos Marina; the operator's own site does not state a boarding point and gives only a company address in Ferragudo, which is an office. Confirm the exact meeting place on the voucher before you travel and allow time for the walk from the car park and the footbridge from the town side. It is not Marina de Albufeira, whatever a hotel driver assumes.
