Algarve Cave Tours review: Benagil speedboats from Vilamoura Marina

Who Algarve Cave Tours are and what they run

Algarve Cave Tours is a speedboat operator based at Marina de Vilamoura, the marina resort east of Albufeira. Their website gives the check-in as Loja 12, Cais Q, and lists the company licence as RNAAT 191/2010. When we checked in August 2026 the site offered a Benagil cave and coast tour, a dolphin watching and caves trip, a sunset Benagil cruise, a Ria Formosa trip, private Benagil tours and hourly private hire. The boats are described as modern speedboats with individual seating, and life jackets are provided for all guests. The site does not name individual boats or give capacities, so we do not either.

We are an independent guide and do not sell their tickets. The operator's site advertises a discount for booking direct rather than through an agency, which is worth knowing before you pay on a platform.

They do not leave from Albufeira Marina

This is the fact that matters most if you are reading from an Albufeira hotel. Algarve Cave Tours check in at Vilamoura Marina, roughly 15 km east of Albufeira by road, and nothing on their site mentions a pick-up from Albufeira. If you book them, you are booking a car journey before and after the boat: a taxi or hire car along the N125 or the A22, around half an hour each way once summer traffic is added, plus the operator's check-in window. On a peak morning the Albufeira taxi ranks are already busy with people heading to the local marina, so book the car the day before rather than relying on the rank.

Write “Marina de Vilamoura, Cais Q” on the transfer note. A hotel driver who hears “cave boat” will often head for Marina de Albufeira, and a shared speedboat leaves on time whether or not you are there. If you are staying in Vilamoura or Quarteira, the opposite applies: this is the operator on your doorstep, and an Albufeira departure is the one that costs you a taxi. The tours, format by format

The core product is the Benagil cave tour, which the operator lists at 2 to 2.5 hours depending on sea conditions. Benagil is about 18 nautical miles west of Vilamoura, and the site says the run takes around 45 minutes to an hour each way, so most of the ticket is open water and cliff line. The route passes the same caves and coastline that Albufeira boats reach in less time, because Vilamoura sits further east.

Durations other than the Benagil trip are not published on the site, so take them from the listing you pay on.

What the Benagil rules mean on a Vilamoura boat

According to the Capitania do Porto de Portimão notice (Edital 019/2024, amended by 009/2025), motor boats enter the cave through the west entrance for about two minutes, with at most five boats inside at once, no landing on the inner beach and no swimming or inflatables into the cave. Algarve Cave Tours’ own Benagil page goes further and says its boats approach the entrance and do not go fully inside, with the interior seen from the water. Either way, plan on a short look from the boat, not a beach stop, and expect the longer run from Vilamoura to leave less slack if there is a queue of boats outside the cave. The departure town does not change the rules; it changes how long you spend getting there.

Who this operator suits

Book Algarve Cave Tours if you are staying in Vilamoura, Quarteira or further east, want a small-group speedboat rather than a large catamaran, and like having a sunset or Ria Formosa option from the same desk. It also suits Albufeira guests with a hire car who would rather drive to a quieter marina than walk into the Albufeira morning rush.

Pick an Albufeira operator instead if you are on The Strip or in the Old Town without a car: the 2.5-hour caves and dolphins tour from Marina de Albufeira starts from about €34 and needs no second journey. Pick a guided kayak if being inside the cave for longer than two minutes is the point; under the same notice, guided kayaks use the east entrance for about eight minutes. Pick Elite Yacht Charters if you wanted a private luxury day from the same marina rather than a shared speedboat.

Where they check in

Check-in is at Marina de Vilamoura, Loja 12, Cais Q, in Quarteira. It is not Marina de Albufeira; if your other trips leave from there, our marina guide covers that side. Vilamoura has its own taxi rank and its own morning rush, and the marina is large, so allow time to find Cais Q on foot from the drop-off point.

How to book and what to check on the listing

Search results put “Benagil from Vilamoura” and “Benagil from Albufeira” in the same grid, with near-identical photographs. Filter by departure town first, then open only the cards that name Algarve Cave Tours or Vilamoura Marina, and check:

• Departure point: Marina de Vilamoura, Cais Q, not Albufeira.
• Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours for the Benagil trip; the sea sets the exact length.
• Whether a dolphin search is in the title or only in the photographs.
• Child and infant rules, which the site does not publish; the listing is the rule.
• Weather policy: the skipper decides; if the operator cancels you are rebooked or refunded, if you miss check-in you are not.
• Whether the direct-booking discount on the operator's site beats the platform price on your date.
